There was a book sale at my local community centre, and I had some good luck.
Engel, Howard / Lord High Executioner
A history of hangmen and means of execution.
James, Henry / The Turn of the Screw
Already had a copy; this is a Norton Critical Edition, with commentary, author’s notes, and suchlike.
Maugham, W. Somerset / The Magicians
A roman-a-clef with a character based on Aleister Crowley.
McKinley, Robin / Spindle’s End
A writer I’ve heard of, but whose works I’ve not so far read.
Murphy, Shirley Rousseau / The Ivory Lyre
Given that I have an ongoing low-level obsession with 80s fantasy, this seemed worth a flyer.
Newton, Mark Charan / Nights of Villjamur
Dying-earth fantasy. I’ve heard good things, and Newton seems like a smart writer, to judge by what I’ve seen online.
Robert Sheckley / The Wonderful World of Robert Sheckley
I read and enjoyed one of his novels not long ago, so this collection of short stories seemed intriguing.
Sterne, Lawrence / Tristram Shandy
Again, a Norton Critical Edition.
Uglow, Jenny / The Lunar Men
A book about science and industry in the 18th century, which I’ve been wanting to read for some time; Uglow’s book on Hogarth was excellent, so I’m quite looking forward to this.
