Sentinels

December 1st, 2012

Just a note to say that I had some fun a few evenings ago playing a game called Sentinels of the Multiverse. It’s a co-operative card-based super-hero game. A ‘villain’ card automatically takes an action each round that has certain game effects that will help in the fulfillment of an evil plan, and each player takes on the role of a hero who tries to stop the villain before the aforesaid evil plan reaches fruition.

There are a range of heroes and villains to pick from, and various expansion packs add further characters and environments. It’s occasionally a bit complex, but just enough so that it’s actually fun working out tactics with the other players. In fact, the planning of tactics is actually oddly reminiscent of bronze-age comics: finding new wrinkles to established powers in order to win the day. More than that, overall the game balance tends to create situations where heroes take considerable damage in the early going, but gain strength as they struggle onward. It’s a surprisingly effective pastiche of super-hero stories, and a great deal of fun.

You can find out more about the game here.
