A little while ago I taught an intro college-level course to film and storytelling. That involved me reading a fair bit about film, and so developing a list of movies I wanted to watch. One that I never got around to at the time was a film called Häxan, a silent Swedish film about witchcraft.
Not long ago it occurred to me to look for it on YouTube, where one can find all sorts of surprising things — including complete silent films. Here’s The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, for example. Now as it turns out, Häxan‘s available at the Internet Archive, so that’s great. But what I found on YouTube was something I didn’t know existed: a version of the film from the mid-sixties with audio narration by William S. Burroughs. Unfortunately, it seems that edition of the film’s been edited severely. Still, an interesting curiosity.
